SATELLITE SERVICE PROVIDER SECURES CONTRACTORS AND REMOTE WORKERS WITH CONSENTRY

NSSL Satcom-Solutions Relies on ConSentry to Control Access to Key LAN Resources

Milpitas, CA – August 13, 2007 – ConSentry Networks, the leader in secure switching, today announced that NSSL Satcom-Solutions, the U.K.-based independent integrated satellite solutions provider, is deploying ConSentry’s LANShield Controller to secure its LAN. Having experienced a significant increase in the number of remote workers and contractors requiring access to its LAN, NSSL needed to ensure robust security while sustaining maximum productivity for users of its network.

“As we need to support our burgeoning remote workforce, and allow contractors to connect to our network to accommodate their daily operational requirements, the onus on IT security has increased dramatically,” said Pete Diduch, IT manager at NSSL. “Being able to control access to the network is a key capability, but even more important is being able to monitor usage against predetermined policies, so we can ensure real-time protection for the LAN and its users.”

NSSL worked with its long-time partner Matrix Communications, the wholly owned subsidiary of Calyx Group plc, on this project. Matrix recommended the LANShield Controller for its ability to provide network access control and post-admission monitoring and management.

“Matrix identified our requirements immediately and recommended we implement the ConSentry solution,” said Diduch.

NSSL provides satellite communications for the military, global aid organizations, and maritime organizations.  The company needs to ensure reliable and resilient communications capabilities in some of the world’s most arduous and remote locations. NSSL cannot afford to have its LAN architecture compromised by remote workers, subcontractors, guests, or partners who may introduce damaging malware through human error or a malevolent agenda.

ConSentry Networks, with its LANShield product family, delivers secure switching, enabling NSSL to control every user and secure every port on the LAN. The LANShield products provide network admission control, full visibility into all activities on the LAN resolved to the username (including application details), identity-based control to limit access to resources, and threat control with anomalous traffic detection.

“NSSL Satcom-Solutions is typical of a growing number of companies that rely on contractors and other non-employees to help keep their businesses running,” said Tom Barsi, president and CEO of ConSentry.  “The need to secure the network contends with the need to allow outsiders access.  Our LANShield products resolve that conflict, giving NSSL complete control over who can access business-critical resources.”

Matrix implemented the ConSentry LANShield Controller at NSSL to provide effective network access control (NAC) capabilities. Critically, ConSentry enables NSSL to apply post-admission controls to monitor user and application behavior, since the platform looks for anomalous activities that could signal potential threats. Those post-admission controls extend to include policy enforcement on what servers users can reach and what apps they can run. The platform also enables identification of malware that may be introduced into NSSL’s LAN inadvertently by a remote worker or contractor logging on with an infected machine.

“The ConSentry solution ticks all the boxes.” said Diduch. “It enforces legitimate access to, and use of, the network, while at the same time proving more cost effective and efficient than other available technologies. The LANShield Controller takes into account our specific needs and delivers significant value.”

“Achieving open access and providing a high level of network security is a difficult balance,” said Andy Mills, managing director at Matrix Communications. “Ensuring that the LAN is accessible only to authorised and permitted users, and then monitoring their activity, is paramount in achieving this balance. Using ConSentry’s high-performance, transparent LAN security appliance affords enterprises greater control over what users can do on the LAN with minimal infrastructure disruption and maximum efficiency gains.”
