LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL BETS ON CONSENTRY NETWORKS TO CONTROL LAN SECURITY

Nevada’s Largest Daily Newspaper Deploys ConSentry’s Secure LAN Controllers to Stop Unauthorized User Access and Contain Malware Outbreaks

Las Vegas, NV – September 19, 2005 – ConSentry Networks, a leading provider of secure networking solutions for LANs, today announced the Las Vegas Review-Journal (LVRJ) has selected ConSentry’s Secure LAN Controller  product line to eliminate unauthorized user access to its mission-critical LANs and contain destructive malware, two sources of potentially catastrophic network downtime. ConSentry’s breakthrough product line delivers an identity-based networking solution that enables the LVRJ, for the first time, to enforce which applications and resources individuals and authorized user groups have access to on its LANs. As a result, LVRJ has taken a major step forward in securing its internal networks that are vital to the uninterrupted production of Nevada’s largest daily newspaper.

With a daily readership of more than 160,000 and a Sunday circulation approaching a quarter-million, the LVRJ is owned by Las Vegas-based Stephens Media Group, publisher of 100 different newspapers and websites across the country. As circulation and advertising continues to grow with the increasing population of Las Vegas, still one of the fastest growing cities in North America, the Review-Journal is acutely aware of the need to maintain optimal network availability and LAN security to meet its rapidly expanding circulation.

According to Steven Olson, infrastructure manager for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the publication’s internal networks are critical to supporting story submissions, page layout and pre-press activity. With over 1,500 network users nationwide, many of them part of an expanding mobile workforce of reporters and contributing writers, the need for increased visibility into user activity and access control have become business-critical issues. Because the newspaper’s mobile workforce bypasses the perimeter firewall when connecting to the LAN, it subjects the Review-Journal’s network to various user access and malware threats that can cause network downtime or lead to misuse and unauthorized activity.

“We’ve tried to address this issue by segmenting our LANs with static IP addresses and Access Control Lists (ACLs) but this approach has proven to be much too complex and has begun to consume valuable IT resources which adversely affected other projects,” explains Olson. “We have a small IT team and assigning one person to just manage ACLs wasn’t justifiable from a cost standpoint.”

Continuous Visibility and Powerful Access Enforcement

The LVRJ had demanding criteria to satisfy as it sought an alternative to securing its LANs. After an exhaustive review, the publication selected ConSentry Networks’ CS2400 Secure LAN Controller, the first purpose-built system to deliver continuous visibility into user activity, enforce per user and per application access policies and contain malware in real-time at LAN speeds.

“ConSentry’s Secure LAN Contoller gives us the ability to monitor the activity of every user in real-time and add granular control over what resources and applications each individual user or group of users is authorized to access,” said Vikas Khorana, network engineer and CISSP for the Review-Journal. “Best of all the ConSentry platform is simple to deploy and manage, enabling our staff to work on more critical projects.”

ConSentry takes a unique approach to continuously tracking user activity by coupling a user’s identity to their IP and MAC address as the user authenticates to the LAN. This correlated user information dramatically improves the effectiveness of policy enforcement, authorization and reporting on a per user basis. By providing a centralized view into individual user activity, ConSentry is delivering new levels of visibility not found in traditional network and security management products. It also helps expedite compliance reporting and troubleshooting for network/security incidents. Furthermore, as an in-line control appliance, ConSentry enables immediate action to be taken from a single device, rather than relying on disparate systems with external enforcement points that lack integration.
