CONSENTRY NETWORKS’ CUSTOMER, THE LAS VEGAS REVIEW JOURNAL, RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS INFOWORLD 100 AWARD

Award Recognizes the Publication’s Adoption of ConSentry Secure Switches for Role-based Access Control

Milpitas, Calif. – November 14, 2007 ConSentry Networks, the leading provider of secure switching, announced today that one of its customers, the Las Vegas Review Journal (LVRJ), won the InfoWorld 100 annual award. The award recognizes the most creative and cutting-edge implementations of enterprise technology, and LVRJ won for its recent network upgrade to support companywide voice over IP (VoIP) and Network Access Control (NAC). The LVRJ is owned by Stephens Media, and the LVRJ IT department serves the entire corporation.  This award-winning IT project served the company’s entire employee base of approximately 1,600 people in more than 50 sites across the U.S.

Out of the 100 winners, LVRJ was one of only two media-related organizations selected as award winners. To be considered, projects had to stretch beyond the typical, off-the-shelf solution and use multiple technologies in innovative ways to serve well-defined business goals.

“Whether ushering legacy systems into the agile era or revolutionizing how their companies leverage technology to meaningful ends, this year's winners are both inspiration and proof that striking a new path in IT can reap deep organizational rewards,” said InfoWorld Senior Editor Jason Snyder. “This year's recipients of InfoWorld's highest honor are shining examples of IT projects undertaken by tech leaders committed to pushing their organizations forward.”

In preparation for companywide VoIP, LVRJ's IT department upgraded the company's WAN with a new MPLS network from AT&T, trialed Mitel VoIP handsets at five sites in Hawaii, replaced its network core with two redundantly configured 10Gbps-capable Foundry devices, and upgraded to ConSentry LANShield Switches in the wiring closets to provide VoIP application protection and user-based access control. The project's ultimate goal was to create an application- and user-aware network to better enable services such as VoIP and role-based access control.

“With the ConSentry secure switches, I was able to build knowledge of users and applications directly into my network upgrade,” said Steven Olson, infrastructure manager for the LVRJ, who also supports all of Stephens Media.  “I get full access control, down to the user and application level, so I can ensure appropriate network access for guests vs. employees while also providing security and application assurance for my VoIP service.”

The upgrade to the ConSentry LANShield Switches displaced the company’s incumbent switch vendor and followed LVRJ’s previous investment two years earlier in ConSentry LANShield Controllers.  The combination of ConSentry controllers and switches enabled LVRJ to roll out secure switching pervasively, providing identity-based control throughout the headquarters’ facility.

InfoWorld’s recognition of this high-profile project at the LVRJ demonstrates how identity-based access control is integral to next-generation network services,” said Dan Leary, vice president of products and marketing at ConSentry Networks. “To keep the network constantly aligned with business goals, IT needs the kind of service-oriented LAN infrastructure that ConSentry is pioneering with its secure switches.”
