REDBACK NETWORKS DEPLOYS CONSENTRY TO LIMIT USER AND DEVICE ACCESS ON THE LAN

ConSentry LANShield’s Access Control and Visibility Improve Network Uptime and Enable Role-based Policies

Milpitas, Calif. – November 27, 2007 ConSentry Networks, the leader in secure switching, announced today that Redback Networks, an Ericsson company that makes video-centric routers for 75 percent of the world’s largest triple-play networks, has deployed ConSentry to help secure its multi-building headquarters campus in San Jose, CA. Redback chose the ConSentry LANShield™ devices over competing security platforms from other vendors because of their stronger user access control, improved visibility, and scalability and performance.

With a growing number of malware attacks and increasing numbers of visitors accessing the network, Redback’s network manager Wendell Lee was concerned about security and the openness of the corporate LAN.  Lee wanted to restrict network access to authenticated users while providing limited network services to guests, contractors, and other non-employees. To ensure users could reach only resources that they were authorized to use, Lee required post-admission network controls to supplement the application-based controls already in place. To limit the spread of malware, he needed to detect suspicious traffic and the ability to quickly shut down devices generating that traffic.

Currently Redback Networks has deployed LANShield devices in buildings in its headquarters’ campus, and the company plans to roll out additional LANShield platforms in its Hong Kong, Rotterdam, and other locations.

“ConSentry was very simple to install,” said Lee. “And since the LANShield device has the capacity to handle heavy traffic, I don’t have to worry about any upgrades or changes I might make to the network in the future.”

Prior to selecting the ConSentry solution, Lee evaluated network admission control (NAC) products from multiple vendors, including Nevis Networks and Vernier Networks. “I picked ConSentry for its performance and architecture, which is more scalable than other vendors’ solutions,” said Lee.

ConSentry not only met Redback’s immediate security requirements but offered many additional capabilities.  The ability of the LANShield platforms to authenticate users both passively and actively, do a posture check for the presence of operational antivirus software, and contain or block harmful traffic was particularly relevant.

Lee also has developed a deeper understanding of his network operations through the ConSentry Insight Command Center, which provides “a good inventory of equipment and users on my network,” he noted. “I also get more visibility into network problems.” InSight enables rapid forensic troubleshooting, auditing, and reporting and the ability to set policies based on the reported information.

ConSentry’s ability to tie all LAN activity back to a username also streamlines the process for discovering, notifying, and stopping a user whose system is the source of the malware. Using ConSentry’s InSight Command Center, Lee can view a list of infected machines and associated usernames and stop an outbreak.  “ConSentry’s threat control and containment capabilities save us money since we then don’t need expensive IT staff spending valuable time isolating and fixing infected systems,” he added.

“Redback’s experience in gaining immediate return on investment, with a path toward increasing controls in the future, is typical of many ConSentry customers,” said Dan Leary, vice president of marketing at ConSentry. “Having the wide range of capabilities in a single platform offers enterprises the best overall network security coupled with easy installation, high performance, and scalability.”
