Secure Switching

Secure Switching is the ability to control every user and secure every port on the LAN

Why do we need Secure Switching? Because LANs have been designed for connectivity, not control, and businesses can no longer afford that open access.

Historically, LANs were built on trust – not consciously by IT but implicitly because of the open nature of LAN products. Today, business models have changed. Organizations are working with groups of people with whom there is no expectation of trust – such as guests, contractors, offshore teams, and outsourced groups. And trust presents too great a risk – the rise of the insider threat and increased regulatory pressures demand both new controls and the ability to document them.

Secure Switching is the antidote to today’s open LANs. Deployed as an appliance alongside your existing LAN infrastructure or as a secure switch if you’re refreshing your wiring closet, secure switching gives you network access control like you’ve never had it before. But you can’t just bolt on a few new features, update a supervisor engine, or install a new chassis blade and get there. It takes a new platform – with high-performance, specialized hardware and software, built from the ground up to secure the LAN.

With secure switching, you get:

Full network access control. You need control over all users and devices. You need to make sure users aren’t able to access sensitive data outside their job responsibilities. You also must protect the LAN from accidental or malicious attacks launched from or directed toward the full set of IP-based devices, including printers, VoIP phones, card readers, manufacturing equipment, medical devices – even soda machines.

With application fluency. It’s not enough to just “guess” at the application based on L4 ports. To know what users are doing, control their actions, and identify and contain malware, the enforcement devices have to truly understand the application.

At wire speed. You need control, but not at the expense of productivity. You can’t ask your users to take a step backwards in the performance they’ve come to expect on the LAN. Control has typically forced a trade off against speed, but while the LAN/WAN boundary or wireless connections could tolerate the sacrifice in performance, the LAN can’t.

Simple, integrated, complete network access control – that’s secure switching.
